I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the environment. You will be pleased to know that in 2003 you and other concerned people like you in 56 committees across the state raised $722,923 in grass roots events in Pennsylvania.
The dollars you have so generously contributed have had far reaching effects. DU prides itself in its ability to turn one dollar raised into three to five dollars spent by cooperating with federal, state, and local organizations to add the extra three to four dollars. With these dollars, DU biologists are busy at work on projects throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. One of the more highly publicized projects is the Chesapeake Bay Initiative. Pennsylvania, as you well know, is part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, one of the largest such watersheds in the world. The Ducks Unlimited organization and the Tuscarora Chapter of DU are very pleased to be part of the effort to restore and preserve this most vital resource.
Many of our DU dollars, however, are spent at home. (Click on the map at left
for a larger image) The amounts spent in Pennsylvania to date total $7,940,987. Presently there are 21,510 conservation acres in Pennsylvania in 2,561 completed projects with many other projects ongoing. Locally, the application of DU resources is very obvious. In Juniata County, DU conservation efforts total 39 acres of upland and 31 acres of wetland along with 25 miles of stream bank fencing. Perry County also boasts of 18 acres of wetland and 5 miles of stream bank fencing.
The Tuscarora Chapter is very proud of its members and their stance on the side of conservation and the environment. In the thirteen years of its existence, our chapter has consistently been one of the most successful chapters in Pennsylvania. We have been
awarded many citations for our contributions to waterfowl conservation, and you, our members and sponsors, are directly responsible for this success. The volunteers of the Tuscarora Chapter salute your generosity and dedication to the cause of conservation. With your continued support, we can insure the beauty of nature and the survival of waterfowl for coming generations.

Ducks Unlimited Conservation Plan
For over six decades, Ducks Unlimited (DU) has maintained a singleness of
purpose that has guided the organization to become the leading waterfowl and
wetlands conservation entity in North America. Dynamic and responsive leadership
by staff and volunteers, working together, has assured that DU's
work evolved in response to the ever-changing pressures on waterfowl and the
habitats upon which they depend throughout their annual cycle.
 |
From time-to-time, DU has
re-evaluated its future path to make sure it is in tune with the needs of
waterfowl and wetlands conservation. This strategic plan represents the most
recent iteration of such a self-assessment conducted by staff and volunteers to
assure that the organization is effectively in pursuit of its mission.
DU believes that solutions to
fundamental problems must be anchored in the most up-to-date scientific
understanding of waterfowl and the habitat resources to which they are
intimately tied. Thus, this plan has been guided by a thorough review of our
current knowledge of the biological issues affecting the birds and their
habitats.
Habitat is the key to healthy waterfowl populations.
THOUSANDS of DU conservation projects are found throughout the United States,
Canada, and Mexico; wherever waterfowl breed, migrate, or winter.
Because waterfowl are migratory, they depend on different habitats across
North America.
In the early 1990's, DU Inc., DU Canada, and DU De Mexico formulated a plan
for conservation into the 21st century, the DU Continental Conservation Plan.
The plan details:
- Regions that focus on various habitats important to specific species of
waterfowl.
- Initiatives devoted to restoring and protecting these key areas in need.
- Projects within these initiatives that have led to over 9.4 million acres
of restored, protected, and enhanced wetlands.
