Pennsylvania Ducks Unlimited: Conservation Projects
MARSH
In 1985, Ducks Unlimited initiated a national program known as MARSH (Matching Aid to Restore States
Habitat) to protect and enhance waterfowl habitat at the state level. The program is funded
on a 7.5% reimbursement based on the state's chapter income. To date, the MARSH program has generated $1,526,558
for cost share on waterfowl projects in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Game Commission, U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and other co-operators have contributed an additional $4,817,834 to the future of
waterfowl. Thus far, 377 projects have been completed, restoring and protecting more than 18,276 acres of wetland
habitat in the state.
CHESAPEAKE BAY INITIATIVE
In 1997, DU started the Chesapeake Bay Initiative as an effort to increase the restoration of
wetland habitat and water quality within the Chesapeake Bay. Under this Initiative, DU along with
its conservation partners, including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, PGC, USFWS, and Natural
Resources Conservation Service, works with private landowners to restore wildlife habitat on their
property.
To date, the Initiative has completed 225 projects restoring over 800 acres of wetlands, 625 acres of
upland buffers, and 60 miles of stream bank habitat.
GRASSROOTS SUPPORT
Ducks Unlimited has been and continues to be the world's leader in the conservation of wetlands and
waterfowl habitat. To date, DU has raised over $1.3 billion and conserved over 8.8 million acres
of habitat that benefits more than 600 species of waterfowl and wildlife. Including some endangered & threatened species.
